[Raleigh-- is not as lucky as her because his clothes are half in the bathroom and across the floor and generally too far to get out of bed without their daughter noticing that he's naked. He's naked and he's (was) trying to have sex with Mako and Sophia is way too young to realize what's going on but old enough that she's starting to grasp the magical question of why? why? why? and he's so frustrated (in the sexual sense) that he has to move gingerly to hide Certain Things from her and keep the sheet over his lower half as he moves to sit up in bed.
Giving her a check up, w o w okay. But Sophia seems to buy it, burying her face against her plush pony and shaking her head to answer Mako's question.
"I had a bad dream" she whimpers "Can Daddy read me another story?"
Aha no, that's-- not going to happen for a few minutes without walking off the problem and she can't be in the room while he tries to find pants and this is the one time that being her favorite story teller is bad.]
[ Raleigh's moving under the sheets behind her and she doesn't need to look back to know what he's doing, but she'd be damned if she'd let him 'walk it off'. They spent a good while getting there, there's not going to be any solving of the problem. Not tonight. Mako's putting their little girl to bed, then she's coming back to him and they're going to pick up where they left off.
So she picks Sophia up when the little girl nods finally, a little too distracted by her own nightmare to properly protest. But she does ask -- "Why?" Mako, getting the hang of lying, simply says: ]
Because Mommy is sick, and Daddy needs to find Mommy a cure. [ She kisses her nose briefly, but Sophia looks ashen. "Sick, Mommy?" ] Mm. But there's special kind of medicine to make Mommy well again.
[ Mako doesn't really know where she's going with this, but she's winging it and giving Raleigh a look over her shoulder -- no letting Junior go half-mast, got that? ]
[Okay, yeah, he's not seventeen anymore but he's never had a problem getting it up for Mako before, in his defense. Though their daughter in the same room is proving to be a pretty effective boner killer, go figure.
Raleigh catches the look though, even as he's trying not to laugh at Mako's excuses. Right, got it, don't have to tell him twice to sit around and think dirty things about her.
[ Right around twenty minutes later, Mako comes in, rubbing her eyes. Twenty minutes is a long time and maybe Mako's not quite in the mood anymore, because Sophia's just peppered her with questions about what the both of them were doing.
Honestly, their little girl is adorable and she loves her but if she doesn't stop asking uncomfortable questions Mako's going to snap. She crawls back into bed with a quiet groan. ]
[Twenty minutes is a long time. Yes. Despite his best efforts, little Raleigh's interest in being around has waned, disappointed by the lack of Mako around and he gets it, buddy. He feels you. It's not that fun without her.]

[Raleigh shifts to make room for her, leaving a spot open in his arms. Sophia asking questions is a pretty good mood killer.]
[ Mako utters another soft groan, snuggling into his arms and settling against him. It's horrible. So horrible, even pressing up against him is doing so little for her (and that never happens) because all she's thinking of is Sophia's echoing question: is daddy sick too? he has a funny little lump in his blanket.
It had come up so suddenly in Mako's re-reading of Goldilocks and the Three Brown Bears that she'd stumbled over her words. Little Raleigh obviously had taken its own sweet time to go back down, clearly. Mako cringes at the memory of Sophia's innocent question. ]
She asked about you. I don't want to talk about it.
Raleigh sighs like a man who knows that he's not going to have any sex tonigth, and resigned to that fact. Not that he's mad, he gets it, they have a busy life and a curious toddler and that's not very good conditions for an active sex life. But he is kind of disappointed, little Raleigh made a pretty good effort at staying around even when she wasn't.]
I'm sorry. I guess we have to start locking that door.
[ She's sorry, baby. Here, have some kisses to make up for the disappointment. Mako's pretty bummed out too, and she doesn't need to be a mind-reader to be aware of what Raleigh's feeling. Holding him closer, content to just snuggle even if they're not going to have sex anytime tonight, she sighs and nods. ]
And look into getting a babysitter. We could plan a night out, just the two of us. [ Her fingers drift lightly over his chest, thoughtful and contemplative. ] One day.
[Raleigh's always content to have her close. There is honestly never a moment when he wants to push her away, and the lack of sex is disappointing but it's not enough to ever want to be away from her.]
[ It's what she loves about him; their love isn't contingent on how sexually intimate they are, and it's a relief to know that. Smiling, she basks in the moment, allowing his closeness to drive everything else away as she thinks on it. ]
I can always make arrangements. [ Bumping her nose against his, she muses. ] What are you thinking?
[Raleigh can't make the same kind of arrangements because he does have a week off coming up in a few weeks for spring break. How silly is this, he's thirty and thinking about what he's going to do for spring break with his hot wife.]
[ Mako perks up, because she'd almost forgotten that spring break exists for Raleigh and that's always a perfect time for a getaway. Summer holidays were even better, but sometimes Raleigh picks up temp jobs, or to use that time for his hobbies.
Said hot wife is busy contemplating the potential of that, then. ] A beach.
[ Mako hasn't worn a proper bikini in a long, long time, and the idea of swimming in the surf makes her tingle. Think of the cold water, and the sun on her skin. Or basking next to her half-naked, recklessly handsome husband? ]
[What is she talking about? Mako is one of his hobbies.
Sometimes Raleigh thinks that he has a love/hate relationship with the ocean. Where he's lost so much to it but he can't ever bring himself to hate it. Especially not a clear, white sandy beach with no sign of kaiju anywhere. That's what they fought for isn't it?]
Mako loves the ocean -- loves what it means; she'd lost family to it, too, but they've left her, them a legacy, a reminder to live, and live well, for all those who couldn't.
It's what they fought for, and it's what they'll keep fighting for, no matter who the threat is. She brightens, because she's actually getting quite sick of chilly weather right now, thank you very much. ]
