Mako Mori is not supposed to fall in love with the mark, the target, the man whose skull she's supposed to put two bullets into because -- oh, what the hell, she doesn't even care to know. All she knows is that somehow he's made a few very powerful people very angry (which is difficult to believe because have you met him? Raleigh Becket is as uninvolved with those kinds of people as they come) and they want his head in return.
They'd hired her because she's the best at what she does, because she doesn't ask questions and she takes the money and gets the job done by getting close and striking when they're at their weakest.
But with Raleigh, she pulls back twice. Three times. It shames her as much as it enthralls her, the way she's so drawn to him, the way she warms up to his kindness and his gentleness, the way he looks at her like she's the only person in the world who matters. She learns that he has a brother who died, she learns that he's working hard to make something of himself, and she learns that he likes hockey and chili and he kisses like he's in love with her and she's in too deep to pull away.
She tries to kill him the fourth time, when they have sex for the very first time and he cuddles up to her, vulnerable and sweet, his lovely pink lips kiss-bruised and his skin sporting her bruises, her teeth-marks.
She doesn't.
Mako stays until the morning that day. And the day after that, and the day after. She's cat-like, lazing in his bed when he leaves, sitting up behind him and wrapping his arms around his waist in silence when he comes home, her secrets in the warm breaths that fan over his back. She holds him tight this afternoon, and allows herself to smile because this is bliss, and this is frightening and lovely all at the same time. ]
[Raleigh's just in the wrong place, wrong time. Twice apparently, since the first time he gets himself on a hit list, for doing the right thing, for walking a girl three blocks in the dark to her front door after work because this isn't the best part of town and she shouldn't be walking around this time of night by herself. That was the plan thought and he messed it all up and he has no idea.
The second time is that he's vulnerable to Mako. In a place where he's lonely but won't admit it, so when this beautiful, exotic woman starts talking to him at the bank, he's pulled in after one conversation. They go on a date, two dates, a lot of dates, and sleep together and it hasn't been that long but he'd swear he's in love with her.
Raleigh doesn't do a lot of things slow, throws himself at her and latches on tight in a short amount of time because he knows. He can just feel it. He is a little surprised when she's still there after he comes back from work, sitting on the edge of the bed to take off his shoes and there's a tightness in his chest when she curls up behind him that has nothing to do with pain, loss like it used to but everything to do with how he feels about her.]
[ Wrong place, wrong time -- that can happen to anyone, and Mako's beginning to settle on that theory because how can he possibly be the one that's caused the death of the woman he'd walked home? The people who wanted his head was her father, who had inadvertently spotted them before her suicide.
But Mako's not paid to ask questions -- she's paid to do the deed, simple and clean and she's done it so often in the past that it should be a piece of cake, right?
It isn't. When he comes home and he looks at her that way, she remembers why she hesitated pulling the trigger; he's had a hard life, he clings to her like she's a liferaft in his own personal storm, he's lonely and he's sweet and she's not sure what to do with that.
Love him back? Wouldn't that be something. She smiles briefly against the curve of his neck, her chest plastered against his back. ]
I used your shower. [ You know, if she wasn't a paid assassin, she'd be a cat. ]
shit i didn't even think of that reason, you're amazing
[Pretty safe to say that Raleigh has no idea that she's even dead. Because he didn't really know here, was just doing the right thing and then when they parted ways, yeah he didn't hear from her again but he didn't think much of it.
Raleigh laughs a little, turning to look at her over his shoulder.]
Yeah I can tell. You used my soap.
kahsdkjhdf that's because you inspire the best ideas c:
[ A part of Mako is even thankful that it happened -- because without it, she wouldn't have met him; wouldn't have fallen so wretchedly in love with him and it's damning her.
She gives him a flicker of a smile, because he could smell her, and she finds that endlessly sweet in so many great and terrible ways. ]
And you need a shower, yourself. Busy day for you.
[Raleigh keeps shifting in her arms so he can kiss her properly. A man could get used to this, you know, Mako. Coming home to a pretty woman in his bed.]
[ She's smiling against him; a man could get used to it, indeed. Mako entertains the reservations she has in the back of her mind, on the warning that she can't get closer, that she can't compromise herself and the assignment -- and she wonders if it isn't already too late.
Mako sniffs, before she's falling into a kiss with him, falling into him. ]
[ Oh. Well. Mako's pleasantly surprised by that; she does like when he gets bitey, but he's pulling away and she can't help the disappointed little noise she makes.
Oops.
She rises from the bed anyway, cat-like and still as graceful, her eyes holding a spark of lazy mischief. ] Shall I help?
[It is without a doubt, going to ruin him if they fall apart. Because right now, in this moment, watching her all graceful and sexy and so great, he feels like he's cheating somehow. That he hasn't done anything to deserve her.]
Pretty sure if you do that, neither one of us is going to get clean.
[ It's going to be inevitable, wouldn't it? There's a bullet in her gun with his name on it, and Mako is caught in the middle -- still trying to decide. But then Raleigh looks at her that way and things get far too complicated for anyone's good.
She turns towards the kitchen then, and thinks it would be far easier to just poison him. Quick, easy, right? He wouldn't feel a thing. But. ]
[Smiling, Raleigh catches her by the hand and pulls her back in for another kiss, just a quick searing thing. Like thanks for the food and the sex last night and the more sex we're going to have in a few hours.]
It won't take me that long, I'll help when I'm done.
[ Mako's discovered that she likes when he does that, when he kisses her hard and makes her tingle and she knows why she holds back, again and again. He's gone too quickly, and Mako decides to busy herself in the kitchen, looking through the items he has, and deciding to scrounge up some eggs and bacon, together with tomatoes.
He's not very good when it comes to feeding himself, she realises, and smiles briefly to herself because it's just like him, isn't it? When Raleigh comes out, he'll be treated to the delicious smells of bacon, and delicious, fluffy eggs. ]
[What a coincidence, Raleigh loves bacon, like any good American boy does. He can feed himself just fine too, by the way, he just prefers to have someone else make it for him and sometimes it's just easier to go out and grab a pizza or take out.
Raleigh wanders down to the kitchen within ten minutes, showered and dressed in different clothes and yes, he got all of his parts clean just fine.]
[ That's not called feeding himself fine, by the way. Ten minutes is still quite a short time to get all his parts cleaned okay, how do you even get clean in ten minutes.
Mako smiles briefly, and hands him a plate full of scrambled fluffy eggs and bacon - help yourself. ]
[ Mako tells him simply, putting two more slices into the toaster. A girl could get used to this, really, and when her back is turned, it allows her more privacy to be contemplative. ]
[Mmmm... what? He's just a dude trying to eat eggs here, it takes him a moment to really process what she's saying and yeah, alright she's got a point. He did let her in pretty easily, he guesses. It's not like she made it difficult on him.]
[ Mako's tone is mild, and she smiles briefly, as if putting lie to her words.
No, she really is -- but a part of her is invested in this, in him. She's a liar and a killer, but a part of her doesn't want him to know it; wants him to keep seeing her as what she allows him to see. ]
[ There is a sweetness to him that she wants to preserve, a brightness in his smile that she doesn't want to see dimmed -- and oh, Mako knows, she's in deep, deep trouble.
She's in love with him. ]
I could be a poisonous kitten. [ She smiles, wiggling her fingers briefly. ] Sharp claws.
